What is an Orthosis?
An orthosis is a medical appliance. It is used externally and provides different functions:
- Improving limited functions
- Correcting posture or position
- Post-operative protection
Lost or impaired biomechanical body functions are being replaced or restored by the orthosis.
Just like the functions, the types of orthoses are also quite different: Among them are therapeutic shoes, corsets, inserts, side bars, neck braces and lower extremity orthoses.
An orthosis is prescribed by a doctor. If necessary, the orthosis will be custom-made.
Custom-made orthoses are produced by an orthotic technician or an orthotist. When producing an orthosis, technique and craftsmanship are directly linked.
